Once Upon a Grime http://cjmilli.com/once-upon-a-grime/ http://cjmilli.com/once-upon-a-grime/#comments Tue, 13 Aug 2013 23:05:28 +0000 http://cjmilli.com/?p=13869 Continue reading ]]> DL: Once Upon a Grime [.zip]

What is Grime Music? Instead of just leaving you bbs to figure out the meaning of this hotness on your own, we figured you could use a little history lesson from your favorite sXc schoolteacher~ CJ Milli.

Musically influenced by UK Garage, drum and bass, ragga, and jungle, Grime/Eski music originated out of London, UK in the year 2000. Before grime was even known as grime, east London MC/producer Wiley created a sound called Eski – inspired by his cold feelings towards the world at the time. When Wiley first created this new sound, he called it “Eski-beat” and referred to himself as the “Eski-boy”. It was Wiley’s signature sound that came to solidify the Eski era as one of the most important times in the UK underground Electronic dance music scene. This particular sub~genre of grime is said to have a distinctive “icy,” winter-themed beat, whatever the fuck that means. To me, Eski music is most characterized by those nintendo-sounding clicks. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you listen to Slackk’s track ‘Eski Clicks.’ I’ve done a bit of research trying to find the exact origin of some of the most commonly used samples in Eski, but wasn’t able to find any definitive answers, so consider it your homework to find that out.

Until recent experimentation with the genre, almost all Eski beats were spat over and recycled by loads of MCs. For example, Wiley’s “Ice Rink” instrumental was rapped on by about twenty different MCs, both underground and mainstream. You have most likely heard of Lady Sovereign. You may have also heard of Dizzee Rascal. In the US we would tend to call that style of music hip-hop, because here, that’s what we call any music with words rapped over it. In the UK they currently call this style grime. It has words rapped over music like hip hop does, but the music is more clubby than most american hip hop.

Eski music has since gained it’s own life. Producers like Slackk, Walton, Logos are emulating the classic Wiley sound today and are developing it further. And if you hadn’t heard of grime yet, you heard it here first! This is your chance to be on top of the trend early bbs~

Vogue Pack #2: Real Cunt Shit http://cjmilli.com/real-cunt-shit/ http://cjmilli.com/real-cunt-shit/#comments Fri, 19 Jul 2013 22:29:01 +0000 http://cjmilli.com/?p=13722 Continue reading ]]> DL: Real Cunt Shit [.zip]

Now that we’re half way through 2013, we think it’s safe to say that this is totally the year of the queer. Here at cjmilli.com, we’ve been focusing our efforts on simultaneously destroying #EDM and encouraging and promoting the growth of more forward thinking genres. This being said, we couldn’t be happier that the ballroom scene is growing in popularity, and that more and more producers are trying their hand at making ~vogue music~. For those of you who don’t even know wtf Vogue music is, here’s a little vogue-cabulary lesson taken from our first post on vogue music:

“Inspired by Vogue magazine, voguing is a modern house dance characterized by model-like poses integrated with angular, linear, and rigid arm, leg, and body movements. It was originally called “presentation” and later “performance.” Over the years, the dance evolved into the more intricate and illusory form that we now know as “vogue.” Although Madonna’s hit song “Vogue” brought voguing to the masses, it’s existed long before Miss Thing was even famous. In fact, voguing can be traced back to the ballroom scene of the 1960s where gay black men were running shit. This style of dancing has since spread to just about every major city of the U.S., and of course internationally.”

Sugur Shane and his pussy are two of our favorite things about vogue music right now. Since we value his opinion so highly, we asked mister Sugur Shane himself  if he would be willing to share with us exactly what vogue music means to him. He so sweetly obliged, so here is a VIP except straight from #sugurshanespussy:

“Vogue music to me is minimal vocals with the ha crash. Well at least that’s what I think it means to most people. I think it’s crazy that there is even a such genre as vogue music. A person who excels at vogue can do it to any beat with no samples of “the ha”. I don’t think the scene is evolving at all actually; there’s just a spotlight on it right now. That spotlight will soon dim when the “kiki” legends bring this scene through a reality show. When I go to a ball it seems watered down with vogue fem. I don’t want to go to a ball to see one category for 2 hours. Nor do I want to see a so called legend get so much life when they are destroying the scene. ”

Sugur Shane — Qween Beat Attack (320 kbps)

Sugur Shane — Show Me What You Got! (320 kbps)

Divoli S’vere is a pioneer in vogue music. Here’s 3 tracks that we think are all perfect examples of what vogue music is/should be today, and where it is headed.

Tree — Like Ya Mother (Divoli S’vere Remix) (320 kbps)

A few months ago I heard NGUZUNGUZU drop a forthcoming L-Vis 1990 dub on Boiler Room, and omg I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since! I did a bit of internet surfing, and discovered that that the track is a simple edit of “Icy Lake” by Dat Oven, which was released way back in 1998. You know I had to post the original track here~ love on that til we hear word on a release for L-Vis 1990’s “Fire Alarm Refix.”
